Characters

The Heroes and Villains, sometimes both;

Final Fantasy IV features a highly diverse cast of characters. Your party constantly switches, and one of the most challanging aspects of the game is learning to play with different character configurations. Sometimes you'll have one tank and 3 mages, sometimes you'll have plenty of muscle but lack proper white magic. Each of the characters has their own backstory, though admittedly some are more complex than others.

Cecil

Cecil Harvey: Cecil is the main character in the game, and you will always have him in the party. That's a good thing, because he's one of the strongest fighters in the game! Cecil is the captain of the Red Wings, Baron's airforce. After one particularly grusome mission, Cecil questions the King of Baron's motives. He is stripped of his rank and forced on a menial errand, with dire consequences. He must learn to overcome the darkness in his soul to defeat true evil.

Spoilers! (highlight to read) Midway through the game, Cecil forsakes his Dark Knighthood and becomes a Paladin, a true champion of justice. He also finds out he's half-Lunarian.

Kain

Kain Highwind: Kain is Cecil's best friend, and he defends Cecil when he begins questioning his orders. He is the leader of the Dragon Knights, but the King strips him of his rank when he helps Cecil. Kain also has feelings for Rosa, an old flame whose affections have turned to Cecil. As a dragoon, he sports an awesome jump attack, which allows him to deal massive damage while taking none himself.

Spoilers! (highlight to read) Due to Kain's jealousy of Cecil, primarily in his relationship with Rosa, he is easily manipulated to turn against the party. He betrays the party more than once while under mind control. But in the end he helps the party fight against the ultimate evil. Good thing too, he's an amazing melee character.

Rosa

Rosa Farrell: Rosa is Cecil's love and an extroardinarily powerful white mage. Though she may seem like a damsel in distress, she has strong opinions and refuses to be left behind. She is an excellent archer and a constant comrade, and her healing abilities are second to none.

Rosa

Rydia of Mist: Rydia is a young girl who joins Cecil after he accidentally destroys her town and kills her mother. (Oops!) She learns to overcome her fears and forgive Cecil for what he did for her. As the last of the Callers, which would be "summoners" in the later games, she has access to some truly devestating attacks, and is a respectable black mage to boot.

Edge

Edward "Edge" Geraldine: Edge is the prince of Eblan, a kingdom know for its ninja far and wide. Edge is thus, quite a competant ninja, bringing a variety of useful skills to your team. He can steal, throw, or use his unique ninja magic. He's a bit of a womanizer and seems to find Rydia particularly enticing, but his motives for joining the party go deeper than that. After Rubicant destroys his homeland and his parents are turned into monsters, he seeks revenge on those who wronged him.

I'll be adding the profiles of the other characters later, but that's your final party.
